Nootbaar, Gibson lift Cardinals to victory

Lars Nootbaar drove in two runs and Kyle Gibson pitched six effective innings, lifting the St. Louis Cardinals to a 5-1 victory Wednesday against the visiting Arizona Diamondbac­ks.

It was the first win in a series finale this season for the Cardinals.

In his 299th MLB start, Gibson allowed one run and five hits. He struck out six and walked two. Three relievers finished for St. Louis.

The Cardinals bounced back from a 14-1 loss Tuesday. They took a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning against the defending National League champions. With one out, Brendan Donovan singled and Willson Contreras doubled.

Nolan Arenado’s single scored Donovan and Contreras scored on a wild pitch.

Arenado has reached base safely in 23 consecutiv­e games since March 30.

Mets 8, Giants 2: Francisco Lindor went 4 for 5 with two home runs and four RBIs for New York, which avoided a sweep at San Francisco. Tyrone Taylor went 2 for 5 with a homer and three RBIs for the Mets. Reed Garrett (4-0) got the win with two innings in relief of starter Sean Manaea.

Orioles 6, Angels 5: Gunnar Henderson homered and had a two-run single for Baltimore, which built a 6-0 lead through the top of the sixth before Los Angeles rallied late behind home runs by Mike Trout,

Taylor Ward and Zach Nito. Trout’s blast made him MLB’s first player to reach 10 home runs this season.

Red Sox 8, Guardians 0: Connor Wong homered twice and Rafael Devers connected on a solo shot in his return to Boston’s lineup after missing five games with a knee injury. Rookie outfielder Wilyer Abreu added four hits in Cleveland’s second shutout loss to the Red Sox in a week.

Dodgers 11, Nationals 2: Shohei Ohtani had three doubles for Los Angeles to raise his MLB-leading batting average to .371 and rookie starter Landon Knack earned his first victory.

Rays 7, Tigers 5: Curtis Mead hit his first homer of the season to help Tampa Bay avoid a three- game sweep against visiting Detroit. The Rays had lost three in a row and five of the previous seven.

Yankees 7, Athletics 3:

Aaron Judge’s two-run homer in the first inning launched New York’s 11-hit attack. Anthony Rizzo and Juan Soto also went deep for the Yankees.

Braves 4, Marlins 3: Michael Harris II’s single in the bottom of the 10th scored Ronald Acuna Jr. with the winning run for Atlanta.

Twins 6, White Sox 3: Joe Ryan struck out eight in six innings for Minnesota and Willi Castro launched a three-run homer in the Twins’ four-run second inning.

Cubs 4, Astros 3: Michael Busch’s sacrifice fly and Dansby Swanson’s three-run homer in the first gave Chicago all it needed. Jose Altuve homered for Houston, which lost its fourth in a row to fall to 7-18.

Royals 3, Blue Jays 2: Alec Marsh and five Kansas City relievers held Toronto to six hits. Salvador Perez got his 23rd RBI, third best in the majors.

San Francisco Giants lefthander Blake Snell, the reigning National League Cy Young Award winner, was scratched from Wednesday’s start against the Mets and placed on the 15-day injured list with a left abductor strain. Snell was 0-3 with an 11.57 ERA in his first three starts after signing a $62 million, twoyear contract.

• Two-time All-Star pitcher Johnny Cueto agreed to a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers.

The St. Louis Cardinals demoted struggling outfielder Jordan Walker to Triple- A Memphis.

• The Toronto Blue Jays put outfielder Kevin Kiermaier on the 10-day injured list with a left hip flexor inflammati­on and called up their sixthranke­d prospect, third baseman Addison Barger.

• The Red Sox placed righthande­r Brayan Bello on the 15-day injured list with lat tightness. Boston has a league-leading 13 players on the injured list including starting pitchers Lucas Giolito (elbow surgery), Nick Pivetta (elbow strain) and Garrett Whitlock (oblique).
