OHIO ST over Rutgers by 31
With Urban Meyer watching from afar while serving the first of his 3-game suspension, the Buckeyes blasted Oregon State, 77-31, on 723 yards of offense behind the strong and accurate arm of new QB Dwayne Haskins. The sophomore became the first OSU QB to throw for over 300 yards in his debut (22 of 30 for 313 yards and 5 TDs) and did not have a planned running play – quite a departure from the J.T. Barrett days. Running back Mike Weber filled in the gap, rushing for 186 yards and 3 scores. The Buckeyes are 4-1-1 ATS in their first Big Ten conference game of the season over the last six years and have covered 4 straight times in this series, but you know darn well we are not comfortable laying 5 touchdowns in any game, much less one against an improving conference rival. To back that up, the well-oiled machine displays OSU’s 1-5 spread record as conference chalk of more than 31 points and Rutgers’ 5-0 ATS mark when coming off a SU home victory. In addition, the Scarlet Knights have a future star of their own at QB in true freshman Artur Sitkowski, plus a trio of quality RBs including Boston College transfer Jon Hilliman and returning starter Raheem Blackshear. Until current Rutgers boss Chris Ash, a former OSU assistant, can solve the Buckeyes riddle – having been outscored 56-0 last year and 58-0 in 2016 – we’re obligated to join Urban on the sidelines and sit this one out.
