FLORIDA INT’L over UMass by 8
If only actor Dick Wilson hadn’t died in 2007. If the guy was still breathing, we’d suggest hiring the actor who used to play Mr. Whipple on the Charmin commercials to take over for current UMass head coach Mark Whipple. The still-upright Whipple enters the fifth season of his second term at the helm in Amherst, and the previous four years have resulted in a 12-36 SU disappointment. Considering UMass went 1-11 in its first year in the FBS, we’re wondering if it isn’t time to consider stepping back down. What the Minutemen really need right now is a home game in which to regroup but tonight finds them on the road again in Miami, their third in a row away from Paul Revere land. And folks, these guys might have played Georgia Southern in Statesboro last week but whatever heat and humidity they experienced there will barely register on the ‘feels-like’ scale compared to the sauna that awaits them at Ricardo Silva Stadium. Besides the series host being on a 3-0 SUATS run, Florida International has cashed in 7 of its last nine regular season games, including a 63-45 win over UMass in the home finale last year. The bottom line is the Minutemen lost the stats by 241 YPG against FBS opponents in 2018, and they’re keeping pace in 2018, out-gained by a scarily similar 236 YPG in losses to Boston College and GSU. Lay the short price with the Panthers at home tonight, but please… don’t squeeze the Charmin.
