VA TECH over East Carolina by 31
The Pirates heard a lot of grumbling after they dropped their season opener to FCS foe North Carolina A&T, despite the fact that Aggies were unbeaten last year (12-0). Turns out ECU was just playing the wrong Carolina team: when UNC came to town last week, the Pirates blew them out of the water, winning 41-19 as 15-point underdogs. However, things look rather bleak for the visitors in Blacksburg today as Virginia Tech HC Justin Fuente has treated ECU like plague-infected victims that must be put down before their disease spreads, winning 54-17 and 64-17 in his two seasons with the Hokies. Tech followed up its impressive 24-3 throttling of Florida State with a 62-17 win over William & Mary where the Gobblers rushed for 305 yards and 7 TDs. And so far in 2018, the Va Tech rush defense has allowed only 64 YPG on the ground (a mere 2.2 YPR), making it highly unlikely that the Pirates will come close to the 220 rushing yards they gained against North Carolina. The ATS archives agree that today is VT’s day. The Hokies are 4-0 SU and 3-0-1 ATS in this series when ECU takes the field off a SUATS win, plus they’re 4-1 ATS as nonconference chalk of more than 10 points. No such luck for the visitors, who are just 1-5 ATS when coming off a SU dog win of 7 or more points, and a dead-on-the-slab as dogs of 21 or more points. Only one way to look here as the Pirates get their timbers shivered for the third straight year by Captain Fuente’s crew.
