As great as college football can be, it can be equally cruel. Take Oklahoma, for example. The Sooners will be operating today without star RB Rodney Anderson, who was lost for the season after suffering a knee injury in the first quarter of last week’s game versus UCLA. “We’re heartbroken for him,” said OU head coach Lincoln Riley, noting that Anderson had already suffered two season-ending injuries in his OU career. “He’s already had to overcome so much.” So what we have arriving at Ames today is (a) an Oklahoma squad off to a blazing start in 2018, going 2-0 SU while outscoring foes, 56-17, and out-gaining them by 214 yards per game; (b) banding together to play for a fallen team captain whose season has been stolen; and (c) making the Cyclones pay for last year’s shocking upset of the Sooners at Norman – where OU lost outright as 31-point chalk. Normally, we wouldn’t dream of laying the big wood with a road favorite but we have to wonder if the Cyclones’ season isn’t going sideways in a hurry. After Iowa State’s season opener was postponed by inclement weather, they rolled into Iowa City for the annual Cy-Hawk Trophy war with Iowa. But after taking a 3-0 lead into the second quarter, Matt Campbell’s crew was shut out the rest of the way in a hugely disappointing 13-3 defeat (Cyclones scored just 3 points for the second straight game at Kinnick Stadium). How can they trade points with a rolling ball of butcher knives looking for blood in OU’s biggest revenge situation in ages? Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray has already thrown 5 TD passes and running backs T.J. Pledger and Trey Sermon are capable replacements for Anderson, averaging 5.9 and 5.1 yards per rush this season, respectively. With the Sooners currently on a run when playing away with conference revenge, and Iowa State a weak 3-7 ATS as a dog versus Big 12 revenge, we’ll wrap things up by calling in
