Twenty-nine writers received 2017 Guggenheim Fellowships in creative writing. The fellows in poetry are Michelle Boisseau of Kansas City, Missouri; Victoria Chang of Rossmoor, California; Jennifer Grotz of Rochester, New York; Matthea Harvey, Gregory Pardlo, and Claudia Rankine, all of
New York City; Ishion Hutchinson of Ithaca, New York; Davis McCombs of Fayetteville, Arkansas; Patrick Rosal of Philadelphia; Michael Waters of Ocean, New Jersey; and Afaa M. Weaver of West Cornwall, Connecticut. In fiction, the fellows are Brian Evenson of Valencia, California; Michelle Huneven of Altadena, California; Samantha Hunt of Tivoli, New York; Phil Klay, Fiona Maazel, and Alexander Maksik, all of
New York City; Viet Thanh Nguyen and Marisa Silver, both of Los Angeles; and Ron Rash of Clemson, South Carolina. In creative nonfiction, the fellows are Kevin Baker, Masha Gessen, David Mikics, and Cynthia Saltzman, all of New York City; Emily Rapp Black of Riverside, California; Kevin Davies of Washington, D.C.; Susan Faludi of Brunswick, Maine; Ander Monson of Tucson, Arizona; and Benjamin Moser of Utrecht, Netherlands. The annual fellowships, of approximately $50,000 each, are awarded in recognition of “achievement and exceptional promise.” The next deadline is September 18.
