WRITING PRIZES
Denise Duhamel and Julie Marie Wade, both of Hollywood, Florida, won the 2016 Glenna Luschei Prairie Schooner Award for their collaborative essay “13 Superstitions.” They received $1,500. Genevieve Williams of Omaha won the 2016 Edward Stanley Award for a group of poems; David Crouse of Seattle won the 2016 Lawrence Foundation Award for his short story “I’m Here”; and Alireza Taheri Araghi of Saint Louis won the 2016 Virginia Faulkner Award for Excellence in Writing for his story “Snow.” They each received $1,000. David Campos of Clovis, California, won the 2016 Prairie Schooner Strousse Award for a group of poems; and Kaitlyn Teer of Bellingham, Washington, won the 2016 Bernice Slote Award for her essay “Drawing a Breath.” They each received $500. Kwame Dawes judged. The annual awards are given for poems, short stories, and essays published in Prairie Schooner in the previous year. There is no application process.
SILLERMAN FIRST BOOK PRIZE
Bernard Matambo of Oberlin, Ohio, won the 2017 Sillerman First Book Prize for African Poets for his poetry collection, Stray. He received $1,000, and his book will be published in 2018 by University of Nebraska Press. The African Poetry Book Fund editorial board judged. The annual award, sponsored and administered by the African Poetry Book Fund in partnership with Prairie Schooner, is given for a debut poetry collection by an African poet. The next deadline is December 1.
