Sunday Times EFG Short Story Award
Bret Anthony Johnston of Cambridge, Massachusetts, won the 2017 Sunday Times EFG Short Story Award for his story “Half of What Atlee Rouse Knows About Horses.” He received £30,000 (approximately $39,000). The finalists were Kathleen Alcott of New York City for “Reputation Management;” Richard Lambert of Norwich, England, for “The Hazel Twig and the Olive Tree;” Victor Lodato of Ashland, Oregon, and Tucson for “The Tenant;” Celeste Ng of Cambridge, Massachusetts, for “Every Little Thing;” and Sally Rooney of Dublin for “Mr Salary.” They each received £1,000 (approximately $1,300). Anne Enright, Andrew Holgate, Mark Lawson, Neel Mukherjee, and Rose Tremain judged. The annual award is given for a short story by a writer from anywhere in the world who has been previously published in the United Kingdom. (SEE DEADLINES.)
