Pirate’s Alley Faulkner Society

A prize of $7,500 is given annually for a novel; a prize of $2,000 is given for a book of nonfiction; three prizes of $1,500 each are given for a short story, a novella, and a novel-in-progress; and a prize of $1,000 is given for an essay. A prize of $1,000 and publication by Lavender Ink is also given for a poetry collection. The winners will also have excerpts of their work published in Double Dealer, the Faulkner Society’s annual online publication, and will receive travel and lodging to attend the 2019 Words & Music Festival in New Orleans in September. For the novel prize, submit a novel, up to three linked novellas, or a novel-in-stories (up to twelve stories total) of any length. For the nonfiction prize, submit a memoir, history, biography, or linked essay collection

(up to twelve essays total) of any length. The entry fee for both contests ranges by word count, from $45 for a manuscript of up to 125,000 words to $200 for a manuscript over 200,000 words. For the short story prize, submit a story of up to 7,500 words with a $35 entry fee.

For the novella prize, submit a novella of up to 10,000 words with a $35 entry fee. For the novel-in-progress prize, submit up to 7,500 words of the beginning of the novel, a one-page synopsis, and a

$35 entry fee. For the poetry collection prize, submit a manuscript of at least 50 pages of poems linked by theme or place with a $35 entry fee. For the essay prize, submit an essay of up to 2,500 words with a $25 entry fee. Submit all entries via e-mail; the deadline is April 1.
