Community of Writers at Squaw Valley
The Community of Writers at Squaw Valley offers workshops in poetry from June 22 to June 29 and in fiction and creative nonfiction from July 8 to July 15 in Squaw Valley, near the north shore of Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada mountains. The program features workshops, craft talks, publishing panels, readings, and one-on-one conferences with faculty. The faculty includes poets Forrest Gander, Robert Hass, Brenda Hillman, David Tomas Martinez, Jane Miller, Sharon Olds, and Gregory Pardlo; fiction writers Ramona Ausubel, Tyler Dilts, Vanessa Hua, Rhoda Huffey, Krys Lee, Victoria Patterson, Margaret Wilkerson Sexton, and Greg Spatz; fiction and nonfiction writers Lisa Alvarez, Dagoberto Gilb, Louis B. Jones, Howard Norman, Joyce Carol Oates, Héctor Tobar, and Jane Vandenburgh; and nonfiction writer Frances Dinkelspiel. Participating agents and editors include Miriam Altshuler (DeFiore and Company), Michael Carlisle (InkWell Management), Ben George (Little, Brown), Tom Lutz (Los Angeles Review of Books), Christine Pride (Simon & Schuster), Jack Shoemaker (Counterpoint), Peter Steinberg (Foundry Literary), Jonah Straus (Straus Literary), Andrew Tonkovich (Santa Monica Review), and Oscar Villalon (ZYZZYVA). Tuition, which includes some meals, is $1,150 for a poetry workshop and $1,200 for a prose workshop. Lodging is available in nearby apartments and shared houses, and ranges from $320 for a shared bunkroom
to $1,415 for a private apartment. Limited financial aid is available. Using the online submission system, submit four to five pages of poetry with a $35 application fee, or up to 5,000 words of prose with a $40 application fee, by March 28.
