TRANSLATION PRIZES
Jennifer Russell and Sophia Hersi Smith, both of Copenhagen, won the 2020 Nadia Christensen Prize for their translation from the Danish into English of Rakel Haslund-Gjerrild’s novel Alle Himlens Fugle. They received $2,500 and publication of an excerpt in Scandinavian Review. Alexandra Glynn of Park Rapids, Minnesota, won the 2020 Leif and Inger Sjöberg Award for her translation from the Finnish into English of Anna-Mari Kaskinen’s book of hymns Laulu. She received $2,000 and publication of an excerpt in Scandinavian Review. The American-Scandinavian Foundation prize jury selected the winners. The annual awards are given for unpublished translations of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction from a Nordic language into English. The next deadline is September 1. Banipal Trust for Arab Literature SAIF GHOBASH BANIPAL PRIZE FOR ARABIC LITERARY TRANSLATION
Kay Heikkinen of Chicago won the 2020 Saif Ghobash Banipal Prize for Arabic Literary Translation for her translation from the Arabic into English of Huzama
Habayeb’s novel Velvet (Hoopoe, 2019). She received £3,000 (approximately $4,125). Omar Al-Qattan, Justine Jordan, Nii Ayikwei Parkes, and Paul Starkey judged. The annual award is given for a book of poetry or fiction translated from the Arabic into English and published in the previous year. As of this writing, the next deadline has not been set. Baton Rouge Area Foundation ERNEST J. GAINES AWARD FOR LITERARY EXCELLENCE
Gabriel Bump of Buffalo, New York, won the 2020 Ernest J. Gaines Award for Literary Excellence for his novel, Everywhere You Don’t Belong (Algonquin Young Readers, 2020). He received $15,000 and was honored at a virtual awards ceremony in January. Anthony Grooms, Edward P. Jones, Elizabeth Nunez, Francine Prose, and Patricia Towers judged. Blakemore of Hartford won the 2021 Felice Buckvar Prize for Nonfiction for “My Tapeworm.” They each received $1,000, and their winning works were published in the Spring 2021 issue of Bellevue Literary Review. Jen Bervin judged in poetry, Dan Chaon judged in fiction, and Sandeep Jauhar judged in creative nonfiction. Michael Lavers of Provo, Utah, won the 2020 Bridport Prize in poetry for “Low Tide.” Debra Waters of London won in fiction for “Oh, Hululu.” They each received £5,000 (approximately $6,875). Rowena Warwick of Thame, England, won in flash fiction for “Mum Died.” She received £1,000 (approximately $1,375). The winners of the second-place prizes were Luke Allan of Oxford, England, for his poem “After Blue” and Cara George of Oakham, England, for her story “Fight, Flight, Freeze, Comply, Film (FFFCF).” They each received £1,000 (approximately $1,375). The winning works were published in the 2020 Bridport Prize anthology. Mimi Khalvati judged in poetry and Nell Leyshon judged in fiction and flash fiction. The annual awards are given for a poem, a short story, and a short short story.
