In the first large-scale use of chem­i­cal weapons, the Ger­man army—look­ing to break Al­lied lines along the Western Front—re­leases 170 met­ric tons of chlo­rine gas dur­ing the Se­cond Bat­tle of Ypres, in Bel­gium. The heav­ier-than-air sub­stance drifts in a miles-long cloud into French trenches, as­phyx­i­at­ing thou­sands of troops.
