Marc Burckhardt

Painter Marc Burckhardt spends half the year in Austin, Texas, and the other half in Germany, where he was born. His work, which spans 30 years, is inspired by the old masters of the Flemish Renaissance, a group of 16th-century allegorical artists. To create the cone snail on page 64, Burckhardt layered acrylics, then oils, on paper, emphasizing the shape of the mollusk’s shell, the shadows of the deep sea, and the drama of a kill. The result, he says, is evocative of a 3D museum diorama—and a stirring reminder of the line between life and death.
