Leadership Porterville, a program designed to groom future leaders for the community, will hold its first all-day session on Thursday. The program was started in the 1980s and more than 250 people have graduated.
The 2015-16 class will take part in a nine-month program with six all-day classes and seven night sessions. This year’s class began with orientation on Sept. 3 followed by a reception introducing the class on Oct. 1.
Leadership Porterville focuses on many aspects of the city, including local government and businesses. Thursday’s class will focus on education, and the class will also have a two-day trip to Sacramento. Each leadership class also undertakes a large fundraising project to help pay for the following year’s class.
This year’s facilitator is Julie Cheney from Portnaz.
“I’m really excited about the class,” said Stephanie Cortez, CEO of the Porterville Chamber of Commerce. During the welcome reception, Cor- tez put the students on the spot by having them speak. “You would have thought they had already had a public speaking class,” she said.
