The 60th annual Chuck
wagon Breakfast hosted by local 4-H clubs will be held on Saturday, Oct. 10 at the Porterville Fairgrounds. Volunteers will serve the meal from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. All proceeds will go to the 4-H clubs of Burton, Ducor, Pleasant View, Prairie Center, Springville, Tule River, and Vandalia. Tickets are available from 4-H club members. Cost is $5. Pancakes, orange juice, sausage, eggs, coffee, hot chocolate, milk, water and prunes will be served.

The City of Porterville will host its annual
Pioneer Days celebration on Saturday, Oct. 10 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Main Street. Admission is free. Proceeds benefit the Zalud House Museum. A live shootout will be held on Main Street between historical re-enactors organized by the Jackass Mail Run group. A group of riders on horseback dressed as cowboys will start out in Lindsay as part of an “armed” caravan carrying water and head toward downtown Porterville, where a group of “bandits” will await to begin the shootout between Putnam and Morton avenues. An interactive cowboy encampment and volunteer re-enactors from the 10th Calvary Buffalo Soldiers will provide additional entertainment. The day will also feature a rib cook-off with 16 teams. Winners will be selected by a panel of judges while a crowd favorite will be selected by audience members. Those interested in tasting the ribs can buy tickets at the event. “They can exchange one ticket for one rib,” said Tonya Hall of the Porterville Parks and Leisure Department. Additional activities include a “Kids Corner” at the Porterville Historical Museum where parents and children can decorate pumpkins. There will also be a mechanical bull, a bounce house, an Elks Lodge saloon and beer garden, and live music by the band South 65. Three pageants will be held: the Pioneer Days Queen and Princess pageants as well as the Little Miss Pioneer Days Pageant. Contestants for the Little Miss Pioneer Days pageant are Trinidad Uriarte, Payton Mcdonell, Ryley Lawson, Khloe Tienda, Melody Worden, Gracie Childree, Sophia Ayala, Marceline Phengsavath and Adysyn Hyles,
The semi-annual Young
Eagles Flight program that offers airplane rides to young people will be held at the Porterville Municipal Airport on Saturday, Oct. 10. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Flights begin at 9 a.m. and end at noon. The program is for youths ages 8-18. In prior years, as many as 130 young people experienced the thrill of flying when 11 pilots donated their time and gas to provide the opportunity. The Young Eagles Flight program is free for youths and is sanctioned by the Experimental Aircraft Association. Each child must have a parent or legal guardian present to register prior to the flight. An adult friend will not suffice. The flights are insured and each child will receive a certificate. The Porterville Chapter of the EAA meets the first Saturday of the month at Porterville Airport at 9 a.m. For more information, call Liz Raya at 359-2393.

eter Fall Festival will be held from Oct. 1-31 in Exeter. Organizers promise games, contests, arts and crafts, food and entertainment for the whole family. The bulk of the events are held on Saturday, Oct. 10 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., including the annual Fall Festival Parade be- ginning at 10 a.m. The day starts with a 5K run, 2-mile walk and pancake breakfast at 7 a.m. After the parade, there will be live entertainment in Exeter City Park on E Street. The headliner is party band Run4cover, which will play under the gazebo from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Also planned for the park are arts and crafts, games, pet adoptions, a petting zoo, a live reptile show and food vendors. The 9th Annual Car and Bike Show featuring custom and classic cars, hot rods and bikes will be held downtown on E Street between Chestnut Avenue and Pine Street from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information about the car show call 592-2919. In conjunction with the Festival, the Chamber is holding its annual Exeter Scarecrow Contest — “Scarecrows are Returning to Exeter” — from Oct. 1-31. The scarecrows will be on display at participating Exeter businesses, and the public will choose the winners. A Car and Bike Show will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 11 at 19429 Road 228 in Strathmore. The family event is sponsored by the Classics Car Club to benefit the Save Our Streets organization. The event will feature performances by the band Ill Villanz and the Danza Azteca dance group. Registration costs $25, and will be held from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Awards will be distributed at 4 p.m. There will be cash prizes for Best of Show in the car, bike and bicycle categories. The Family Healthcare Network will host its 15th Annual Health
Fair on Sunday, Oct. 11 at Veterans Park in Porterville. The event will be held from noon to 5 p.m., and features live music and a variety of services. Services include health screenings, digital retinal screening vouchers, dental screenings for children and adults; and fluoride application for children age 5 and under and pregnant women. Also available will be healthy recipes, a bailoterapia demonstration, and enrollment information on Medi-cal and Covered CA. A kids zone is also planned, featuring face painting, a bounce house and prizes. Organizers also promise delicious food and a variety of information booths. The park is located at 1501 W. Henderson Ave. in Porterville.
