The Farmers Market at the Sierra View Medical Center has moved to downtown Portervile. The popular makrket will be open Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. through August along Main Street. Shoppers can expect 24-30 booths selling fresh produce and other commodities, plus information booths set up by area agencies and organizations. The first 50 people in attendance at 9 a.m., 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. each Tuesday will each receive $2 for purchases through the Medical Center’s “Healthy Bucks” program. Admission is free. The Tule River Historical Museum is open to the public from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays with no admission charge. The museum houses a collection of vintage lumber mill and farm equipment. Antiques from local families are on display in the 1860 Murphy House and in the main museum. Sergeant Shepherd, the new costumed mascot for the Porterville Police Department, is available to appear at youth-oriented meetings and events. The mascot’s purpose is to spread the motto — “Stand Up and Speak Out!” According to the Police Department, Shepherd will be encouraging the community to “Stand Up” for family, friends and community, and “Speak Out” against drugs, bullies and crime. Registration for the Recreation Afterschool Program (RAP) and Tiny Tots program began July 1. Enrollment takes place at the Heritage Center at 256 E. Orange Ave. in Porterville during regular business hours. Space is limited so early registration is advised. RAP is an afterschool program offered in the Burton School District for grades K–6. It is designed to offer help with homework, teach arts and crafts, lead indoor and outdoor games, and provide a fun and safe place for children. RAP operates Mondays through Fridays on days that school is in session. There are two different program options. Monthly fees are charged. Tiny Tots is a specialized program for children ages 3-5. It takes place weekdays at the Heritage Center from 9 a.m. to noon throughout the school year. Local civic clubs, youth organizations and churches can pre-sell Tulare County Fair carnival ride wristbands to raise money for their activities. The wristbands provide an all-access, oneday pass to the carnival and Kiddie Land at the fair. Organizations earn $1.50 per wristband sold. Wristbands sell for $20 each in advance and $30 during the fair. The fair is Sept. 14-18. It offers a week of free entertainment with paid gate admission, plus educational activities for children, the Junior Livestock Auction, food, new carnival rides and more.
The fifth annual Pioneer Days and Rib Cook-off is set for Oct. 8 and gives grilling fanatics of all levels the venue to showcase their skills. Cost to enter the cook-off is only $100 and includes the ribs. Pioneer Days is an event the whole family will enjoy. Downtown Porterville will be transformed into a vision from the Old West, complete with a live shoot out, historical displays, gold panning, Wild West scavenger hunt, saloon, booths, and more! Plus, there will be live music, the tasty rib cook-off competition and the battle to be crowned Queen, Princess and Little Miss Pioneer Days. The event is a fundraiser with 100 percent of the proceeds from the competitions going to preserve and protect Porterville’s Zalud House Museum. Entry packets for the rib cook-off and pageant are available at the Heritage Center and can be found on the City’s website.
The Porterville Youth Center offers free recreation for youths after school. The center is open from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and is located inside the Heritage Center at 256 E. Orange Avenue. The Youth Center offers a stimulating environment for youths ages10 to 18 and there are no registration fees or monthly costs. The Youth Center’s game room features pool and pingpong tables, game consoles, foosball, board games and more. Members can also enjoy arts and crafts, organized sports and regular adventure trips. Access to the Margaret J. Slattery Children’s Library located inside the Heritage Center offers students a computer lab with Internet access. A quiet classroom is also available for homework assistance. Parents and children must be present when enrolling.
