Six from MHS, PHS named to ALL-EYL girls soccer teams

It was a good showing out of the Orange Belt with six players from Portervill­e and Monache High School’s girls soccer team being named to the All-east Yosemite League’s first and second teams.

Monache (9-10-3, 6-31 EYL) seniors Alexi Baca and Lupe Torres were named to the first team while seniors, Valerie Mena and Gladiz Garcia received second team selections.

The Marauders’ finished tied in league for second place with Tulare Union with a 6-31 EYL record. Seeded 14th in the CIF Central Section Division II, Monache lost 4-1 to thirdseede­d Madera South (16-11-2) in the opening round.

From Portervill­e (510-3, 2-7-1 EYL), senior Valeria Rios was selected to the first team while junior Alexa Hernandez was named to the second team.

“They are great players,” Portervill­e head coach Cruz Rivera said. “The team will miss Valeria. She is a phenomenal player and we wish her the best. We are fortunate to have [Alexa] one more year.”

BASEBALL Granite Hills 7 Tranquillt­y 1

Granite Hills dominated Tranquilli­ty 7-1 in a non-league Division VI game Tuesday on the road.

Derek Steidley threw a complete game with 12 strikeouts and one walk only giving up one earned run on three hits.

On offense, Jordan Flores was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIS. Diego Bedolla was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI. Brandon Clingerman was 1-for-1 with a double and a run scored.

GOLF Strathmore wins Monache Best Ball

Strathmore’s boys golfers, Jeeven Larson and Juan Guajardo, shot a 66 to win the card off at the Monache High School Boys Best Ball Golf Tournament at River Island Golf Course

Colton Painter and Shane Lozano from Granite Hills took sixth with a 76, Jacob Givens and Zack Zeibell from Monache came in seventh with a 77. Portervill­e’ came in eighth with a 79.
