Behind 15-point performances from junior Mia Pengilly and senior Mackenna Cabeje, Monache High School’s girls basketball team quickly put away Lindsay, 65-25, in the Cardinals’ home and season opener Monday evening.

The game was tight in the first quarter, with the Marauders (1-1) holding on to a short lead late into the final minutes.

Down 11-6, a layup from Sarah Drake pulled the Cardinals within three. Marlene Gutierrez sank two free throws and a quick shot from the post to give Lindsay their only lead of the night.

Monache outscored Lindsay 22-5 in the second quarter and 26-3 in the third. The Marauders were able to get points from driving to the basket and occupying the lane to outrebound the Cardinals. It wasn’t until late in the second quarter that Lindsay was able to run their first play of the game.

“I like the hustle,” MHS head coach Charles Britt said. “I think from the top to the bottom, the girls hustled and the effort was there with every single player on the team.”

However, Monache had their own problems when it came to fouling. Starting forward Pengilly was forced to sit early in the first half after picking up three fouls and Monique Duran fouled out of the game. In the first half, 11 out of 14 Marauders had at least one foul and only two players finished with none.

“With the defense we’re running, we’re trying to tighten it up,” Britt said. “And when that happens, we tend to reach and bump more than we need to. So because of that, we foul more than we need to.”

Gutierrez led Lindsay in scoring with 13 points, followed by Mckaylie Caesar with five.

Monache plays again at 7:30 p.m. today at Liberty in Bakersfield, while Lindsay travels to Fowler for the threeday Fowler High School tournament beginning Wednesday. Porterville 4 Corcoran 0

“Very pleased with the performance of the whole team,” said PHS coach Eddie Gutierrez.
