Helping One Woman (H.O.W.) will hold a benefit dinner and raffle drawing this month to help local resident Vanessa Winter. Winter and her husband, Wesley, have a son, Riley, who has a congenital heart defect that requires surgery. Riley is currently at Valley Children’s Hospital. The Porterville chapter of Helping One Woman holds a dinner each month to benefit a recipient whose name is drawn from nominations offered at the previous month’s dinner. H.O.W. attendees purchase their own meal and provide a $10 cash gift at each dinner to assist the woman being helped. A raffle featuring multiple gifts is also held. The dinner will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 20, at the Elks Lodge at 386 N. Main St. in Porterville. RSVP by Jan. 18 by calling or texting 202-3598.
An open studio for budding artists is offered by the Porterville Art Association from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Wednesday at the Art Association office at 151 N. Main St. It will be open to experienced and inexperienced artists who are interested in painting with others or are interested in learning new or different types of techniques or materials. An art instructor will be available for individual instruction and to critique work. There will also be a show of the work every six months. The open studio is open to anyone. Tulare County Resource Family Approval, previously known as Foster Care Licensing, offers orientations twice per month for prospective Resource families. Orientations are held from 6 to 9 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays at the Professional Development Center, 4031 W. Noble Ave. Entrance is at the bottom of the two-story building next to Employment Connection. Orientations are held on the second floor. The door will be locked at 6 p.m. People who are interested in helping will need to attend one orientation meeting, and meet requirements such as being at least 18 years old, being financially able to support their own family, having no criminal record and a clear health screening and being certified in CPR and first aid. Sergeant Shepherd, the new costumed mascot for the Porterville Police Department, is available to appear at youth-oriented meetings and events. The mascot’s purpose is to spread the motto — “Stand Up and Speak Out!” According to the Police Department, Shepherd will be encouraging the community to “Stand Up” for family, friends and community, and “Speak Out” against drugs, bullies and crime. Pink Heals Tulare County will be having a Bunco Fundraiser on Friday, Jan. 19, at the First Congregational Church on Mill Street. Doors open at 5 p.m. for shopping, registration and soup. Games start at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $10 and includes Bunco and soup. Vendors will have cash-and-carry items. There will be door prizes and some great raffle prizes. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at that door. Proceeds will help with maintenance of “Maddi” the Pink Fire Truck and for the new patrol car to be dedicated soon. Pink Heals is a national nonprofit and the Tulare County chapter has recently received their own nonprofit status. This organization is about supporting women and their families in their own backyard, putting people before diseases.
