tsergeant Shepherd, the new costumed mascot for the Portervill­e Police Department, is available to appear at youth-oriented meetings and events. The mascot’s purpose is to spread the motto — “Stand Up and Speak Out!” According to the Police Department, Shepherd will be encouragin­g the community to “Stand Up” for family, friends and community, and “Speak Out” against drugs, bullies and crime. tthe Portervill­e Youth Center offers free recreation for youths after school. The center is open from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and is located inside the Heritage Center at 256 E. Orange Avenue. The Youth Center offers a stimulatin­g environmen­t for youths ages10 to 18 and there are no registrati­on fees or monthly costs. The Youth Center’s game room features pool and pingpong tables, game consoles, foosball, board games and more. Members can also enjoy arts and crafts, organized sports and regular adventure trips. Access to the Margaret J. Slattery Children’s Library located inside the Heritage Center offers students a computer lab with Internet access. A quiet classroom is also available for homework assistance. Parents and children must be present when enrolling. tthe Lindsay Community Theater presents the 2018 Hot Dog Melodrama Theater. The play is entitled “Superheroe­s Unite” and is a spoof of all the superhero movies and television shows that are so popular right now. Show dates are Jan. 26, and 27 at 7:30 p.m. Prices are $10 for adults and $5 for students. As a special bonus anyone wearing a superhero costume to the play receives a free hot dog or nacho at the snack bar. twith the 14th annual Stars in the Hills prom drawing near, the Portervill­e Breakfast Rotary Club is asking the community for help. The prom is an event for developmen­tally disabled high school students in the Portervill­e, Lindsay and Terra Bella areas who are enrolled in the Tulare County Office of Education program. The Club is asking the community to donate any prom dresses (especially size 14 or larger), shoes and/or accessorie­s. The donations will then be used year after year to provide the young people with an opportunit­y to enjoy an evening they will never forget. For no charge, girls will get their hair styled and nails manicured, and boys will be fitted for tuxedos. Monetary donations will be also be accepted to help offset tuxedo rentals. The prom will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, March 3. Donations of clothing must be received by Feb. 1 so the club can have them dry-cleaned. tthe Portervill­e College Foundation Hall of Fame induction banquet will be held on Feb. 2 at River Island Country Club with networking and reception (heavy appetizers) at 6 p.m. and welcome and introducti­on of honorees Jim Crichlow and Sharon Gill at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 each, $200 for a table of six, and $260 for a table of eight.
