MHS wrestling outright EYL champs

The Monache High School boys wrestling team backed up its impressive run in East Yosemite League duals with an equally impressive showing at the EYL tournament on Saturday at Mission Oak.
The Marauders, who were undefeated in duals, won the team title on Saturday on the strength of five individual champions — Beau Bradley at 154 pounds, Marck Cardwell at 172 pounds, Jared Callision at 128 pounds, Taven Avila at 285 pounds and Jose Flores at 134 pounds — and nine other wrestlers placing no worst than fourth. Porterville High School finished third.
The strong showing sends Monache into the postseason as outright EYL champions.
Bradley, who is ranked fourth in the state with a 30-3 record, was voted Most Outstanding Upper Weights Wrestler.
Cardwell, who is ranked second in the state with a 40-4 mark, was voted Most Technical Wrestler.
Their coach, Arthur Demerath, was voted EYL Coach of the Year.
Porterville’s Andrew Caballero, 140 pounds, Joey Sandoval, 162 pounds, and Tyler Avila, 184, pounds were EYL champions. Porterville had 10 wrestlers place in the top five.
Jayden Fuentes was second at 108 pounds, Noah Castillo was fifth at 128 pounds, Miguel Zendejas was second at 134 pounds, Hector Nava was fourth at 147 pounds, Josh Newsom was second at 172 pounds, Daniel Ayala was fourth at 197 pounds and Clarence Harmon was fourth at 287 pounds.
