Tulare County Library Book Festival is April 14

The inaugural Tulare County Library Book Festival will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 14 at the Visalia Branch Library at 200 W. Oak Ave., Visalia. The Tulare County Library Foundation, along with Tulare County Library and Visalia Leadership hosts the inaugural Book Festival that includes authors, discussion­s, signings, live interviews, literary, and arts organizati­ons, free workshops and seminars, a children’s craft area sponsored by Imagine U Children’s Museum, storytime, food trucks and much more. This is a free event for all ages with books and fun for everyone throughout the day.

Featured authors scheduled to appear include the following:

Tim Z Hernandez — Hernandez is the featured author for the Library’s Book to Action book club that are reading about and acting on immigratio­n and citizenshi­p issues. Hernandez, a graduate from Redwood High School in Visalia, writes both nonfiction and poetry. His latest book is “All They Will Call You” the account of “the worst airplane disaster in California’s history,” which claimed the lives of 32 passengers, including 28 Mexican citizens — many legally working in California, who were being deported.

Patty Rodriguez and Ariana Stein — Rodriquez and Stein are authors of the “Lil’ Libros” series of illustrate­d books that cover the concepts of first words, numbers, colors, shapes, and biographie­s. The two mothers began their mission to introduce bilinguali­sm and Latin American culture through picture board books. Lil’ Libros was created to inspire parents to read to their children and encourage them to do so in Spanish and English.

Norm Brecke — Brecke is a spirited storytelle­r who revels in telling a good story. His music, zeal, and humor add to any occasion. Brecke specialize­s in folktales he spices to make unique. His personal stories reflect his Northwest roots. Brecke often brings music to his stories, accompanyi­ng himself on guitar, ukulele, banjo, or jaw harp. Wherever Norm goes, his enthusiasm for telling stories lights people up.

In addition to these authors at the book festival, join more than 25 additional writers, many from our local communitie­s.

For aspiring writers, workshops are scheduled throughout the day.

Local celebritie­s that will be present to read during story time include Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux; Tulare County Board of Supervisor Amy Shuklian; Tulare County Fire Chief Charlie Norman; City of Visalia Mayor Warren Gubler; Visalia Police of Chief Jason Salazar; Tulare County Assessor Roland Hill; Assemblyma­n Devon Mathis; Assemblyma­n Devin Nunes; Miss Tulare County Princess Kiera Bixler, and more to come.

The Friends of the Library Spring Used Book sale will be taking place along with raffles.

Usborne Book Team will have a free paper airplane for the first 200 visitors to their booth. Usborne Book Team’s mission is to provide quality books to schools, libraries, families, and organizati­ons that support children.
