Panthers win first EYL mini tourney

Porterville High School’s boys golf team won the East Yosemite League’s first-ever 18hole mini tournament Tuesday at River Island Country Club to remain undefeated in the EYL.

Porterville placed first with a score of 447 followed by Tulare Union with 480, Tulare Western with 524, Monache with 537, Mission Oak with 542 and Delano with 611. For the Panthers No. 2 Ethan Standridge shot an 85, No. 3 Jarod Forrester an 86, No. 1 David Herrera Jr. an 87, No. 4 Parker Jones a 90, No. 5 Tyler Jones a 99, and No. 6 Tro-q-hill Franco a 104.

“We had a good day today,” PHS head coach David Herrera said. “Our average was just under 224 for nine holes, which is one of our team goals. The boys played very well for their first 18hole tournament of the year. There are many things to celebrate today. Ethan shot the low round of the day. Troq-hill did a great job on the back nine where he broke 50 for the first time. Jarod snapped his cold streak and is shooting in the low 40s again. Parker also had a solid performance today.”

Coach Herrera added, “We have many different types of goals, small, big, individual and team goals. Today there were quite a few goals that we met which makes us feel as a team that we are moving in the right direction.”

For Monache Austin Thompson carded a 97, Nash Wobrock a 101, Braeden Sanders a 110, Julian Andrade a 113, Michael Hobbs a 116 and Dominic Cortez a 126. Thompson’s low round was made up with a “very consistent” 48 and 49 for the front and back nine holes, respectively.

“Today was a great day of golf for our firstyear golfers in the bottom three spots,” MHS head coach Jake Winter said. “Michael Hobbs not only broke 60 for the first time, but shot in the 50s in the front and the back. He’s starting to act like a golfer around the greens and has improved his chipping and putting tremendously.”

Winter said Andrade also broke 60 for the first time with a 52 on the back nine. He added that Andrade “continues to dominate the par threes” with pars on hole nine and hole 18. For Cortez, Winter said he’s “showing consistent improvement in his ball striking and overall more aggressive behavior in golfing his ball.”
