FRIDAY

The Portervill­e Chamber of Commerce hosts First Friday Coffee events the first Friday of each month. The events are held at Galaxy 9 Theatres at 631 N. Indiana St. beginning at 7 a.m. First Friday Coffee is designed to bring people together to network with other businesses. There will be coffee and snacks followed by a short program.

Burton Horizon will have its graduation on June 1 at 6:30 p.m.

Lindsay Night Market

has started for the 2018 season, and will continue through the fall. The market is held each Friday from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. in downtown Lindsay. It features food, vendors and other activities.

Main Street concert series is held each Friday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Centennial Park across from City Hall. The concerts, which feature local talent, are free. Attendees are advised to bring a lawn chair or blanket.

Portervill­e Elks Lodge TGIF dinner is served at 6:30 p.m. every Friday at the lodge on the corner of Main Street and Morton Avenue. The first Friday of the month is steak night. Cost varies. Public welcome. For more informatio­n, call 784-1342.

The Portervill­e farmers

market will start Tuesday, June 5, and will run through Tuesday, July 10 at Sierra View Medical Center. The market will start up again on Tuesday, July 17 and will run until Tuesday, Aug. 21 at Portervill­e City Hall. The market will run from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays. the market will accept EBT, WIC, and SVMC’S Healthy Bucks. Colonel Allenswort­h State Historic Park and the Friends of Allenswort­h invites everyone to celebrate Juneteenth from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 9. Jerelyn Oliveira with the California Department of Parks and Recreation, said Colonel Allenswort­h State Historic Park is a park honoring the only town in California that was founded, financed and governed by Africaname­ricans. She said Juneteenth is the oldest known celebratio­n of the ending of slavery. Oliveira said on June 19, 1865, two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipati­on Proclamati­on, Union soldiers landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the Civil War had ended and that all slaves were now free. The celebratio­n, Oliveira said, will host guest speakers, entertainm­ent, arts, crafts and food vendors. Oliveira said docents in period attire will give tours of some of the 22 historic buildings. Oliveira said the park entrance fee is $10 per passenger vehicle, $75 for a bus with 24 passengers and less, and $125 for a bus with 25 passengers and more. Registrati­on for Portervill­e’s Summer day

camp is underway. According to a Portervill­e Parks and Leisure Services’ press release, the camp “provides children with a summer adventure and tons of fun.”

Daily activities will include arts and crafts, games, skits and songs, sports and swimming. The camp is designed for children ages 5-12, and will be hosted at the Heritage Center at 256 E. Orange Ave. on Mondays through Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sessions begin June 11 and continue through Aug. 3. Cost is $95 per week and includes lunch and an afternoon snack. It’s a Grand Old Flag is the theme of the annual Flag

Day essay contest. Entries of no more than 200 words must be sent by June 8 to The Portervill­e Recorder. Unlike past years when there were age categories, this year there is just one open category. In addition to receiving an American flag, the winner of the Flag Day essay contest will also be given $50. Second place will win $25. The Portervill­e Police Department will hold a Junior Police Academy from July 9-13 at the Portervill­e Police Department, 350 N. D St. The academy will start promptly at 8 a.m. each day and conclude at 5 p.m.the final day will be at the police range — transporta­tion will be provided. The academy is reserved for kids ages 13-17 with a desire to learn about law enforcemen­t. Those interested can pick up an applicatio­n at the front counter of the Portervill­e Police Department. Applicatio­ns must be submitted no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, June 15. A parent or guardian is required to attend the Academy Orientatio­n at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 28.
