FRIDAY Lindsay Night Market has started for the 2018 season, and will continue through the fall. The market is held each Friday from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. in downtown Lindsay. It features food, vendors and other activities.
Main Street concert
series is held each Friday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Centennial Park across from City Hall. The concerts, which feature local talent, are free. Attendees are advised to bring a lawn chair or blanket.

SATURDAY United Way of Tulare County (UWTC) has announced inspiring educator and author, Stacey Bess, as the
guest speaker at the June 8 Power of the Purse event at the Visalia Convention Center. Bess is a leading national advocate for the educational rights of impoverished children, and is the recipient of the prestigious Jefferson Award, an esteemed national honor for public service. Hosted by UWTC’S Women United affinity group, the Power of the Purse encourages attendees to make a difference in their lives, their workplace, and their communities. Each year, the event features a nationally acclaimed speaker, allowing attendees the opportunity to connect, revive, and thrive while supporting UWTC’S literacy project. Funds are raised during the event by a raffle for dozens of new designer purses. Charles Hickinbotham directs a cast of 14 actors who use their voices and live-action sound effects to create the scenes of “The Lodger,” “Sabotage,” and “The 39 Steps,” in an old-fashioned radio play presented by the KBRN Radio Players. SATURDAY Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park and the Friends of Allensworth invites everyone to celebrate Juneteenth from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 9. Jerelyn Oliveira with the California Department of Parks and Recreation, said Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park is a park honoring the only town in California that was founded, financed and governed by African-americans. She said Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of the ending of slavery. Oliveira said on June 19, 1865, two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, Union soldiers landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the Civil War had ended and that all slaves were now free. The celebration, Oliveira said, will host guest speakers, entertainment, arts, crafts and food vendors. Oliveira said docents in period attire will give tours of some of the 22 historic buildings. Oliveira said the park entrance fee is $10 per passenger vehicle, $75 for a bus with 24 passengers and less, and $125 for a bus with 25 passengers and more. According to a Porterville Parks and Leisure Services’ press release, the camp “provides children with a summer adventure and tons of fun.” Daily activities will include arts and crafts, games, skits and songs, sports and swimming. The camp is designed for children ages 5-12, and will be hosted at the Heritage Center at 256 E. Orange Ave. on Mondays through Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sessions begin June 11 and continue through Aug. 3. Cost is $95 per week and includes lunch and an afternoon snack. The mascot’s purpose is to spread the motto — “Stand Up and Speak Out!” According to the Police Department, Shepherd will be encouraging the community to “Stand Up” for family, friends and community, and “Speak Out” against drugs, bullies and crime.
