FRIDAY Lindsay Night Market has started for the 2018 season, and will continue through the fall. The market is held each Friday from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. in downtown Lindsay. It features food, vendors and other activities.

Main Street concert

series is held each Friday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Centennial Park across from City Hall. The concerts, which feature local talent, are free. Attendees are advised to bring a lawn chair or blanket.

SATURDAY United Way of Tulare County (UWTC) has announced inspiring educator and author, Stacey Bess, as the

guest speaker at the June 8 Power of the Purse event at the Visalia Convention Center. Bess is a leading national advocate for the educationa­l rights of impoverish­ed children, and is the recipient of the prestigiou­s Jefferson Award, an esteemed national honor for public service. Hosted by UWTC’S Women United affinity group, the Power of the Purse encourages attendees to make a difference in their lives, their workplace, and their communitie­s. Each year, the event features a nationally acclaimed speaker, allowing attendees the opportunit­y to connect, revive, and thrive while supporting UWTC’S literacy project. Funds are raised during the event by a raffle for dozens of new designer purses. SATURDAY Colonel Allenswort­h State Historic Park and the Friends of Allenswort­h invites everyone to celebrate Juneteenth from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 9. Jerelyn Oliveira with the California Department of Parks and Recreation, said Colonel Allenswort­h State Historic Park is a park honoring the only town in California that was founded, financed and governed by African-americans. She said Juneteenth is the oldest known celebratio­n of the ending of slavery. Oliveira said on June 19, 1865, two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipati­on Proclamati­on, Union soldiers landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the Civil War had ended and that all slaves were now free. The celebratio­n, Oliveira said, will host guest speakers, entertainm­ent, arts, crafts and food vendors. Oliveira said docents in period attire will give tours of some of the 22 historic buildings. Oliveira said the park entrance fee is $10 per passenger vehicle, $75 for a bus with 24 passengers and less, and $125 for a bus with 25 passengers and more. According to a Portervill­e Parks and Leisure Services’ press release, the camp “provides children with a summer adventure and tons of fun.” Daily activities will include arts and crafts, games, skits and songs, sports and swimming. The camp is designed for children ages 5-12, and will be hosted at the Heritage Center at 256 E. Orange Ave. on Mondays through Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sessions begin June 11 and continue through Aug. 3. Cost is $95 per week and includes lunch and an afternoon snack. The mascot’s purpose is to spread the motto — “Stand Up and Speak Out!” According to the Police Department, Shepherd will be encouragin­g the community to “Stand Up” for family, friends and community, and “Speak Out” against drugs, bullies and crime.
