con­di­tion­ing at home or work can es­cape the heat at four day-time cool­ing cen­ters. The Her­itage Cen­ter at 256 E. Or­ange Ave. is open from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mon­days through Fri­days. City Hall at 291 N. Main St. is open Mon­days through Fri­days from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The Porter­ville Tran­sit Cen­ter at 61 W. Oak Ave. is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mon­days through Fri­days; 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Satur­days, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sun­days. The Porter­ville City Li­brary at 41 W. Thur­man Ave. is open Mon­days through Thurs­days from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Fri­days and Satur­days from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sun­days from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Sergeant Shep­herd, the new cos­tumed mas­cot for the Porter­ville Po­lice De­part­ment, is avail­able to ap­pear at youth-ori­ented meet­ings and events. The mas­cot’s pur­pose is to spread the motto — “Stand Up and Speak Out!” Ac­cord­ing to the Po­lice De­part­ment, Shep­herd will be en­cour­ag­ing the com­mu­nity to “Stand Up” for fam­ily, friends and com­mu­nity, and “Speak Out” against drugs, bul­lies and crime. To check Sergeant Shep­herd’s avail­abil­ity for events tar­get­ing youths in the com­mu­nity call Sgt. Rick Car­rillo at 782-7563.

The Porter­ville Youth

Cen­ter of­fers free recre­ation for youths dur­ing the sum­mer. The cen­ter is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mon­day through Fri­day and is lo­cated in­side the Her­itage Cen­ter at 256 E. Or­ange Av­enue. The Youth Cen­ter of­fers a stim­u­lat­ing en­vi­ron­ment for youths ages10 to 18 and there are no reg­is­tra­tion fees or monthly costs. The Youth Cen­ter’s game room fea­tures pool and ping­pong ta­bles, game con­soles, foos­ball, board games and more. Mem­bers can also en­joy arts and crafts, or­ga­nized sports and reg­u­lar ad­ven­ture trips. Ac­cess to the Mar­garet J. Slat­tery Chil­dren’s Li­brary lo­cated in­side the Her­itage Cen­ter of­fers stu­dents a com­puter lab with In­ter­net ac­cess. The other thing go­ing on at the Her­itage Cen­ter is Sum­mer Day Camp. Kids ages 5-12 are su­per­vised from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Visit the Youth Cen­ter for a tour, or visit the City of Porter­ville web­site or call 791-7695 for more in­for­ma­tion. Porter­ville Home­less Con­nect/ Kings Tu­lare Home­less Al­liance is hold­ing a drive to col­lect gen­tly used coats and win­ter shoes (boots, sturdy shoes and ten­nis shoes). the drive is cur­rently un­der­way and will con­tinue through Oc­to­ber 22. All sizes of men’s and women’s coats and shoes are needed. Chil­dren’s sizes are also needed. Coats are be­ing col­lected at the Porter­ville Arts As­so­ci­a­tion @ 151 N. The Tule River His­tor­i­cal Mu­seum is open to the pub­lic from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sun­days and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tues­days with no ad­mis­sion charge. The mu­seum houses a col­lec­tion of vin­tage lum­ber mill and farm equip­ment. An­tiques from lo­cal fam­i­lies are on dis­play in the 1860 Mur­phy House and in the main mu­seum.
