Students at Strathmore Elementary celebrated their first reading success of the school year with a throwback to the past…a Sock Hop.

It’s the second year for this event, and once again students celebrated reaching their reading goal with a trip to the 1950s.

Included in the celebration were students and teachers wearing poodle skirts and pony tails, students rocking hula hoops, and everyone dancing the twist.

Vintage cars sporting big fins and big chrome arrived at the school courtesy of the Rollin’ Relics Car Club of Porterville.

Strathmore Elementary Principal Jacquie Pennell-meredith commented on the activities: “The sock hop is something all of us look forward to and the students absolutely light up when the vintage cars arrive. The “Rollin Relics” Car Club of Porterville is a supporter this event and the vintage car owners love to interact with the children and show off their 1950s rides.”

Celebrations such as this create a student reading culture that promotes and rewards reading success throughout the year.

Strathmore Elementary, a Leader in Me School, embraces an academic culture based upon Stephen Covey’s Seven Habits of Happy Kids. The Covey process encourages students to set goals, embrace leadership roles and celebrate their academic achievements.

Strathmore Union Elementary School District is a ‘Panda Cares Leader in Me’ awardee, part of the charitable trust of Panda Restaurant Group.
