Granite Hills wrestling won an important East Sequoia League dual against Corcoran, 48-36, at Sierra Pacific High School Thursday.
Valente Garcia (138 pounds), Steven Jacuinde (160), Shane Christie (170), Tommy Martinez (180), Arturo Mendoza (190), Johan Cervantes (220) and Vincent Velasquez (heavyweight) all won their matches by pin for the Grizzlies.
According to GHHS head coach, David Bartlett, it was a dual that essentially decided the ESL champion.
“They were extremely tough and did not want to give up their reign on the title,” Bartlett said. “They’re a major factor in Division II. But guess what? We’re better. Monache’s junior varsity team won 3-0 with Nina Serrato scoring three goals for a hat trick. Spartans drop two Strathmore girls soccer lost both their East Sequoia League games this week. On Tuesday, the team lost 5-2 to Farmersville with Bella Baez scoring both of the Spartans goals. Then on Thursday, the team lost 4-0 to Sierra Pacific.
“We seem like we play well through out the game and then we have spurts where our youth and inexperience shows up and we give up easy goals,” SHS head coach Hector Gonzalez said. “The bright side of our team is that we are still fighting in the games to the end and the team is still learning how to play the game.” Woodlake 2 Granite Hills 1
