Red cross volunteers to install free smoke alarms
The American Red Cross of Kern County is hosting a Sound the Alarm home fire safety and smoke alarm installation event March 16, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Porterville. Volunteers will meet at Porterville College at 100 E. College Ave. to install free smoke alarms and help families create escape plans.
“Every home needs working smoke alarms, because these devices can cut the risk of death in a home fire by half,” Russ Huge, interim executive director, said. “That’s why the Red Cross launched the Home Fire Campaign to help prevent needless tragedies. It’s important for our neighbors to know we will be in the area because it could save a life.”

In a typical year, home fires kill more people in the United States than all other natural disasters combined. The goal of our Home Fire Campaign is to reduce deaths and injuries from these everyday disasters. Already, the Red Cross has reached more than 1.7 million people and saved more than 500 lives across the country since the campaign launched in 2014.
The local Red Cross is able to provide free smoke alarm installations,
critical preparedness education, and disaster relief to local families thanks to the generosity of the community. To learn more about the work of the local Red Cross, visit redcross.org/centralcalifornia.
