Bells Across America
Constitution Week to be celebrated
For the 26th year Alta Mira Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution will be celebrating “Constitution Week with their “Bells Across America” event.
This nationwide event celebrates the 232 year anniversary of the signing of the Constitution. Constitution Week will be from September 17-23 and was adopted by Congress and signed into law by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956.
This year’s event takes place Sunday, September 15 at First Congregational Church at the corner of Fourth Street and Mill in Porterville. The church has been long time cosponsors of the event which will begin at 3:30 p.m.
There will be a patriotic sing a long led by Nick Walters and the presentation of the flags by Scout Troop 132. Proclamations for Constitution Week will be presented by Lindsay Mayor Pam Kimball; Porterville Mayor Martha Flores; Tulare County District 1 Supervisor Kuyler Crocker and Assemblyman Devon Mathis, 26th District.
Tolling of the Congregational Church bells will be at 4 p.m., signifying the time the Constitution was signed. The Community Strings, directed by Pam Aucutt and with solos by Nick Walters and Josh Sutherland will present “But, Mr. Adams.”
A community service award will be presented by Deanna Pettus, regent for Alta Mira Chapter NSDAR. The award is given to an outstanding member of the area who has given of their time and talent for the benefit for the community.
Pocket size Constitutions will be available for all those who wish a copy. Refreshments will be served following the program in the church social hall.
