Pigskin Prognosticators: ‘Dustin’ off the competition

- By CHARLES WHISNAND cwhisnand@portervillerecorder.com

So much for my theory of parody and making it as tough as possible on myself and the other prognosticators.

Dustin Della went 10-0 last week to take the lead with an overall record of 15-5 after week 2. Defending champion David Horowitz is in second at 13-7 while Mary Quijas and myself are tied at 12-8. J.R. Flores is 10-10.

Of course I feel Della was lucky in that two overtime games — Fresno State-minnesota with Minnesota winning 3835 and Byu-tennessee with BYU winning 2926 went his way — and went against me.

Of course if those games had gone my way and had gone against Della, I would have considered it total skill.

And I continue to be my worst enemy as I again have included the Dallas Cowboys in this week’s games for week 3. The Cowboys of course are expected to beat the Washington Redskins at home.

But there’s no way I can ever pick the Cowboys so I’m going with the Redskins. There’s a German phrase schadenfreude, which basically means feeling the joy in the misery of others.

Whenever the Cowboys lose, it’s schadenfreude for me. I’m a San Francisco 49ers fan, so I’ll also never pick against the 49ers.

In the 1990s when the 49ers and Cowboys were the two best teams in football, whenver the Cowboys lost, I enjoyed that sooooooooooooooooooo much more than I ever enjoyed watching the 49ers win. And I’m sure most 49er fans feel the same way I do. Schadenfreude.

So because I essentiall gave away the GiantsCowboys game last week in which the Cowboys won 29-26 and the two overtime games should have gone my way (at least that’s the way I see it) I see my 6-4 as 9-1 and Dustin’s 10-0 as 8-2. Call it the new math.

Not that I’m bitter or anything.
