Gill to hold book signing at the Recorder on Saturday
Local author and popular columnist, Brent Gill, will again be in front of the Portervill Recorder Office on Saturday morning for a book signing for his latest book, Snow on Black Mountain. This is a sequel to his successful first book, Fire on Black Mountain, with the same characters, and the same appealing style of writing.
Gill emphasized, “These books contain no violence, no swearing, and no sex or adult situations. These adventure stories are appropriate for any age.”
The motivation for penning the first book, Fire on Black Mountain, came from accompanying Gill’s father to take firefighters to the top of Black Mountain, but to do it in the dark of night. “What twelve-year-old wouldn’t be excited to get out of bed in the middle of the night, catch the horses, meet firefighters and lead them up the side of a dark mountain on the way to a fire? The experiences of this memorable night became a book, though it took over sixty years. The second one only took nine months,” Gill said.
The sequel to the first book occurs three months later, when the main character, Billy Scott, has to take a few days off school and return to the mountain. The Scott Ranch has 50 head of cows and calves still on the summer range on top of Black Mountain, and there’s a big snow storm coming endangering the cattle. Billy doesn’t know if he can do this alone, but duty-bound, he and his horse Rowdy, leading the pack-mule Jake, climb the mountain.
Raised on a cattle ranch in the Tulare County foothills, Gill says his adventure stories are based on experience, not imagination.
“Every scene or situation written into these tales are things I’ve participated in, observed, or ridden through on horseback. This lends a reality to my writing not often seen in novels.”
Stop by the Recorder Offices at 115 E. Oak St, Porterville anytime between 10 a.m. and noon, this Saturday, October 26 to purchase a signed copy. The books, which can be purchased as a Christmas gift, are $14, including sales tax.
