If this contest was in Nevada, I would be in first place

If I was still in Nevada, I would be in first place

I came here from Carson City, Nev., and during my times there I have found this out about the state: It’s not whether you win or lose — it’s if you cover.

Sports betting is pretty big in Nevada and it’s not always about who wins and loses, it’s about if the team you bet on covers the spread. So I’ll use the excuse that if I was still in Nevada, I would be in first place in our Prognosticators contest.

I’ve been picking a lot of underdogs in the last couple of weeks and many of those underdogs have been covering the spread.

But those underdogs I’ve been picking have still been losing so even though they’ve been covering the spread that doesn’t do me any good here in California.

All the other prognosticators though have been extremely lucky over the last couple of weeks and have done quite well. Not that I’m bitter or anything.

David Horowitz could already be measuring his “Repeat” championship ring from his own quality store, Horowitz Jewelers, as he went 8-2 last week to stay in first place at 54-36.

Dustin Della, who can help you out at Suncrest

Bank, also went 8-2 last week to move back into second at 51-29.

Mary Quijas of Juicy Burger went 7-3 last week and is tied with J.R. Flores of J.R.’S Barber Shop at 50-30. J.R. went 8-2 last week. So J.R. is now picking games almost as well as he cuts hair.

And for Mary and her husband, Freddie, this is the busy time of the year for them when it comes to catering, so you may notice their shop on North Main is closed much of the time. But when they’re not catering they’ll be there. Just look for the American flag hanging and that will let you know they’re open.

Meanwhile yours truly is the best last place picker in America with a record of 6-4 last week to put me at 46-34.

It’s a big weekend in college football with our prognosticators taking on Notre Dame at Michigan,

Wisconsin at Ohio State and Auburn at LSU. Among the top matchups our prognosticators are taking on in the pros include Green Bay at Kansas City and Carolina at San Francisco.

As always you can find the results of the Prognosticators contest in Friday’s Recorder sports section and we encourage you to frequent our Prognosticators businesses and hope you have a great week.
