Basketball
host the winner of the opening round game between eighth-seed Lemoore (16-11) and ninthseed Fresno (16-13).
This is the Panthers’ fourth-straight trip to the playoffs. Porterville reached the semifinals in the previous two years and also played in the state championship tournament.
DIVISION IV
Out of the East Sequoia League, Lindsay (8-18, 4-8 ESL) is going to its first playoff game in three years. The Cardinals are the 16thseed and will travel to top-seed, East Sequoia League champion Sierra Pacific (22-6, 12-0 ESL). Last season the Golden Bears made it to the Div. IV semifinals and semifinals of the state regional championship.
Sierra Pacific beat Lindsay 76-19 and 70-12, respectively, in their ESL matchups this season.
DIVISION V
In their 14th-straight trip to the playoffs Strathmore (25-4, 10-2
ESL) earned the No. 1 seed. The top-seeded Spartans host 16th-seed Firebaugh (15-12) for their opening round game. With a win, Strathmore hosts the winner of ninth-seed Trona (17-5) and eighth-seed Wonderful College Prep (20-6) for a quarterfinal game Friday. Last season in Div. IV, Strathmore lost in the quarterfinals to eventual Valley runnerups, Mcfarland.
BOYS DIVISION II
East Yosemite League champion, Porterville (18-10, 8-2 EYL), earned the sixth seed and hosts 11th-seed Atascadero (15-12) Tuesday to start the Div. II boys playoffs. If the Panthers win, they’ll travel to third-seed Centennial (14-13, 6-4 SYL) out of the Southwest Yosemite League on Thursday.
Also at home Tuesday, eighth-seed Monache (15-12, 7-3 EYL) hosts ninth-seeded Redwood (14-10). A win for the Marauders puts them on the road to face top-seed Roosevelt (19-8, 9-1 EYL) from the North Yosemite League.
DIVISION V
Last season Lindsay finished with a 3-25 overall record and on an 11-game losing streak. But an impressive turnaround this season has the Cardinals with a 20-8 overall record and the fourth-seed to begin the Div. V playoffs. The team also finished tied for second in the East Sequoia League with a 9-3 record.
Lindsay opens at home Tuesday with an opening-round game against 13th-seeded Wonderful College Prep Academy (17-10).
Against common opponents this season, Lindsay was 9-2 while the Wolves were 7-3. Both teams had losses to Reedley (16-10) and Corcoran (18-9), however, Lindsay beat Corcoran in the second round of ESL play.
If Lindsay wins, it will host the winner of an opening round game between fifth-seeded Corcoran and 12th-seeded Highland (9-16).
Also hosting a Div. V opening-round game on Tuesday is eighth-seed Strathmore (17-10, 6-6 ESL), who plays ninthseed Firebaugh (15-12). A win for the Spartans pits them against either top-seed Fowler (23-4) or 16th-seed Granite Hills (12-15, 5-7 ESL).
If both Lindsay and Strathmore win their quarterfinal games, they’ll face each other in a semifinal game at Lindsay on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
