Don’t need lecture on ‘Si Se Puede’

-

In reference to Mr. Juan Silva’s criticism in the usage of the United Farm Workers slogan “Si Se Puede,” I respectfully disagree with his opinion. Personally, I feel that it would be more of an insult to Cesar Chavez if the public would refrain from using the slogan in conversations. The slogan was meant as a “shoutout” for farm workers in the struggle for better working conditions and was further created to encourage people from all walks of life to proclaim the words so that anyone, anytime, anywhere could accomplish his/ her visions or quest. To choose the opposite example “NO SE PUEDE” would shackle the mind of any individual in whatever struggle they were confronted with and the outcome would conclude in defeat.

Mr. Silva is not aware that the late Cesar Chavez conducted one of his first meetings at our residence here in Porterville. His great efforts grew into one of the most effective and productive organizations in the world. Upon his passing while traveling through Terra Bella, Richgrove and Earlimart to Delano to render my condolences I witnessed the small car caravans of followers heading toward the 40 Acres in Delano to do the same and that literally affect me with emotions. As one of the first members of the UFW I respectfully refuse to accept that I cannon proclaim the words of a man that gave me confidence, courage and a pillar to accomplish my goals in life. At the ceremony there were several dignitaries but their attendance did not amuse me. I was there to honor the passing of a man whom I dearly respect to this day, a man that gave me liberty to fight any battle to the end and win, because he said it could be done “Si Se Puede.” John Duran Portervillle
