With my picks, that’s my story and I’m sticking it to it

- BY CHARLES WHISNAND cwhisnand@portervillerecorder.com

As commissioner of the Fearless Prognosticators League I’m declaring the season over and myself the winner.

Of course I can’t do that but it’s just nice to be in first place for a change instead of languishing in last place. And I will now go into my coachspeak after going 8-2 last week to take the early lead at 13-7 after two weeks into the season:

“It took a lot of hard work (actually I didn’t do any hard work at all) to get to this point. I’m proud of myself and the fact I’m in first place is a testament to all the hard work I’ve put. (Actually again I haven’t put in any hard work). But obviously I know it’s still early in the season and there’s a long way to go. I will have to continue to stay focused to reach my ultimate goal, which of course, is to come out on top and to win the title at the end of the season.”

Now I will switch to my talking head-speak.

You know whenever one of those talking heads just happen to pick one game right when everyone else go it wrong, giving them the chance to brag all along how they knew what was going to happen even though all they actually did was go out on a limb.

So this is what I have to say after picking Oregon to beat Ohio State I Columbus after there was NO indication a Pac 12 team could ever beat Ohio State:

“I knew all along Oregon was a very good football team and in the class of Ohio State. Everybody counted them out after they struggled to beat Fresno State at home. I knew they were a much better team than what they showed in that game. Give all the credit to Oregon (actually I’m impersonating one of those talking heads: Translation — Give all the credit to me).”

The fact I have this illogical loyalty to the Pac 12 had nothing to do with my pick.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Of course since I’m so loyal to the Pac 12 and UCLA was so impressive in taking part LSU, I’m picking Fresno State to upset the Bruins. I also have this illogical belief SEC teams are overrated.

Back to coachspeak: “I also know they’re are a lot of good pickers right behind me, so early in the season, this thing is obviously far from over.”

Mary Quijas of Juicy Burger and David Horowitz of Horowitz Jewelery are tied for second at 11-9. Mary went 5-5 last week while David went 6-4.

J.R. Flores of J.R.’S Barbershop and Dustin Della of Suncrest Bank are 10-10. Dustin also went 6-4 last week while J.R. Went 5-5. So going back to my coachspeak: “I know anyone can win this thing.”

As always we encourage you to frequent the businesses of our prognosticators when possible and safe and as always we wish you have a blessed week.
