Rallying after a loss at Merced, the Porterville College softball team was fired up when it took on the College of the Sequoias Giants on Thursday at PC.

After the doubleheader was postponed on Tuesday for a lack of umpires, the Pirates showed some serious grit winning the first game 5-1. With the fire still going the Pirates just lost to the Giants 10-9 in the nightcap.

Ally Boyd pitched for the Pirates and, with a solid six strikeouts in the first game, held down the Giants for a quick seven innings. Mo Mosley led the team with two runs followed by Hailee Smutz, Cienna Enriquez, and Cassie Cannon with one run each.

The first inning had the incredible pitching of Boyd who retired three Giants in a row. Mosley took to the plate and walked. Smutz then sent a deep drive into the Giants outfield. Ally Boyd proceeded to the batter’s box and slammed the ball out into left field scoring Mosley.

The third inning was the best inning for the Pirates in the first game. Mosley singled and Smutz also hit a nice line drive past the Giants shortstop for a single to give PC runners at first and second. Enriquez followed with a powerful hit to right field.

With the bases loaded Cannon landed a hard hit to left field between third base and the shortstop. Mosley and Smutz scored while Chyenne Ausborn nailed another hard hit to the Giants outfield to bring in Enriquez and Cannon for the final margin of the game.

With one game under their belts, the Pirates fought fiercely in the second game. Once again Boyd pitched the whole game, adding another 41 batters faced to her total.

Smutz scoted in the first inning after an amazing hit by Enriquez. At the bottom of the third another two runs for the Pirates wre scored by Enriquez and Cannon. First Boyd would land a ground ball past the Giants first baseman to lead Enriquez to second. Ausborn finished up for the Pirates with a nasty hit to left field, sending the Giants sprawling. Cannon scored as Ausborn took second.

At the bottom of the seventh inning the Pirates were down 10-5. Cannon reached first. Ausborn followed and walked.

With two outs Cannon and Ausborn moved to third and second respectively as Maddy Pierce stepped up. Pierce landed a line drive to right field bringing Cannon home and bringing the score to 10-6.

Mosley landed a hit bringing Ausborn home to make it 107. Mosley stole second. The play was challenged but was held up after review. Smutz landed solid hit to right field allowing both Mosley and Pierce to run in for two more runs bringing the Pirates to their final margin of 10-9.

The Pirates struck out in the following at bat to end the game.

“I’m proud of them all, we really rallied in the seventh.” PC coach Vickie Dugan said. “The first game was our best by far. We were fast and ready and Ally (Boyd) did such an amazing job as our pitcher for both games. Our defense was solid, we didn’t give up, as you see by our four runs in the seventh. (Boyd) also had eight strikeouts so I couldn’t ask for more from them.”

Mosley also celebrated her last game with the Pirates as she plans to move on to further her education. With thoughts on an Iowa or Florida based move, Mosley spoke a bit on her time with the Pirates. “It feels good to have come so far since my first time playing,” Mosley said “In the beginning I didn’t think I was that good at the game but I’ve achieved a lot since then.”
