Pontine Theatre hosts Chef and Author, James Haller
PORTSMOUTH — Join chef & author James Haller at the Pontine Theatre on Saturday, Oct. 7 and Sunday, Oct. 8 at 2 p.m., as he reads from his book, At the End of Ceres Street: A Chef’s Salute to Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
Over 50 years ago, chef and author James Haller found his way to Portsmouth, N.H. In 1970 he and two partners opened Blue Strawbery restaurant and for 16 years Haller was founder, co-owner, and executive chef at the renowned restaurant. The charm of this town and its inhabitants grew into an affection tender and wise, which Haller celebrates in this love letter to the city and to the remarkable individuals he had the good fortune to come to know. Includes illustrations and about a dozen of Chef Haller’s recipes. Books will be available for purchase at the event.

‘Movement for the Stage’ workshops with Pontine Theatre
PORTSMOUTH — Join Pontine Artistic Co-Director, Marguerite Mathews, for a three-session workshop exploring dramatic expression through movement. No experience necessary. For those who perform onstage and/or offstage.
Mathews studied with French actor, Etienne Decroux, at his L’Ecole du Mime Corporeal in Paris and with his protege, Thomas Leabhart, at the University of Arkansas and at the Valley Studio in Spring Green Wisconsin before founding Pontine Theatre in Portsmouth NH in 1977.
Workshop sessions are offered on consecutive Wednesdays, Oct. 4, 11 and 18, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuition is by donation. To reserve a place contact Pontine

Stratham Antiques Roadshow coming
STRATHAM — On Sunday, Oct. 15, the Stratham Historical Society will hold their Annual Fall Appraisal Day, (affectionately known to its members as “The Stratham Antiques Roadshow”) from 1 to 3 p.m.
Family heirlooms and treasures, what are they worth? Works of art, jewelry, china, glass, military memorabilia, photographs and small furniture items? Join us for an evaluation. Fee: $5 for one item, $8 for two, $12 for three and $15 for four, (maximum five items please). All proceeds to benefit the Stratham Historical Society and will go toward maintaining the Society’s collections and other related expenses.
Qualified appraisers will be on hand to provide verbal appraisals and valuable information on items brought in.

The New Hampshire Art Association presents ‘Greece: A Visual Diary of Nine Photographers’
PORTSMOUTH – See the creative beauty of Greece through multiple lenses in “Greece: A Visual Diary of Nine Photographers,” in October at the State Street Gallery.
Throughout history, Greece has been a magnetic force for artists such as poet Lord Byron, dancer Isadora Duncan, and photographer Edward Steichen. In modern times, contemporary artists are drawn to the country by its ancient Greek art, infusing its timeless themes, techniques, and motifs into their own creations.
In November 2022, nine photographers from New Hampshire embarked on a photographic pilgrimage to Greece, each capturing their unique perspectives on the country—both visually and symbolically. Their collective journey led them from Thessaloniki to the Island of Corfu and culminated in Athens. This exhibition allows us to share their individual impressions of Greece and rekindle the excitement of being in this extraordinary country.
Featured photographers in the exhibition include Beverly Conway, Ammara Kahn Born, Syed Jafri, Douglas Prince, Carol Van Loon, Claudia Rippee, Gary Samson, Effie Malley, and Dean Sheldon.
The exhibition will be held in the East Gallery of the Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery at 136 State St. Portsmouth, from Oct. 4 to Oct. 29. The NHAA is hosting a reception on Friday, Oct. 5 from 5 to 8 p.m. as part of the Art Around Town First Friday art walk in Portsmouth.
