Subdivision project may get more land from nearby farm

There was a public hearing Wednesday on a third annexation of land from the Luers Tree Farm that is needed as part of a major subdivision project.

No one from the public came forward to speak, and the only attendees at the meeting appeared to be a Boy Scout troop there for a presentation.

The public hearing was part of the Schererville Town Council meeting.

The new annexation of a little more than 2 acres is in the vicinity of 91st Avenue and Burr Street and adjacent to two other parcels that were already annexed — one that is also more than 2 acres and another more than 100 acres.

They join more than 500 acres initially annexed to the town.

The project is being developed by Australia-based Drapac Capital Partners, which plans to build more than 700 homes on the property.

Attorney Jim Weiser, representing the developer, said this new annexation is vital to the project because it would be an access point.

“It was always thought this parcel was located in the town of Schererville,” Weiser said. “It turns out only a portion of it was.”

When a council member asked board attorney David Austgen if this would be the final annexation for the project, Austgen said he thought the previous one was the last one but “Mr. Weiser surprised me with another parcel, so you never know.”

The council is expected to vote to adopt the resolution for the annexation at its meeting in October.
