Lawyer: Decision on kidnapping charges coming
A grand jury could soon decide if a St. John man would face a federal indictment for allegedly kidnapping a 16-year-old Crown Point girl, his Arkansas lawyer said Friday.
Alexander Curry-Fishtorn, 22, was accused in August of kidnapping the girl and taking her to Malvern, Ark., Lake County charging documents show.
The county case is on hold while he remains in federal custody in Arkansas. The federal grand jury meets about once a month; a decision should come soon, his lawyer, Travis Morrissey, said.
“Most states, they put their cases on hold,” he said. “At that point they may do whatever they may do.”
Lake County prosecutors were granted a retainer warrant Sept 20 in a prior stalking case involving the girl while he remains in Arkansas, court filings show.
Curry-Fishtorn faces nearly two dozen charges in Lake County including kidnapping, criminal confinement, stalking and domestic battery, records show.
He and the girl met at a Crown Point U.S. Marines recruiting event in January where Curry-Fishtorn had asked for Snapchat contacts of prospective recruits. Within a week they started dating, but the relationship quickly turned abusive, she alleged in court documents.
He is accused of forcibly taking the girl to his friend’s house in Arkansas, whom he met through his Marines infantry training. Curry-Fishtorn was hoping to hold her until she turned 18, when he felt prior charges he faced for violating a May restraining order set up by her mother would be dropped, records state. Previously, Curry-Fishtorn was charged with felony stalking, intimidation while violating the restraining order against her, documents show.
As the relationship developed, the girl’s mom tried to stop her from seeing him, expressing alarm for her daughter’s safety in the restraining order application. During the spring, the girl admitted she snuck out several times between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. to see him, documents state.
