Hammond man faces charges in shooting

- By Grant Morgan

A woman’s argument with her child’s father led to a shooting that left one person wounded and the man facing charges of attempted murder in an incident Monday evening in Hammond, a probable cause affidavit said.

An unharmed 1-year-old baby was on scene at the 6500 block of Jefferson Avenue when the shooting occurred, according to court documents.

Francisco Tequimila, 19, of Hammond, faces one count of attempted murder, three counts of battery and two counts of criminal recklessness. He is being held in Lake County Jail, according to charging documents.

The affidavit states that Tequimila’s former girlfriend went to his Hammond residence accompanied by their baby and the woman’s current boyfriend.

An argument between the woman and Tequimila took place outside when the woman’s boyfriend stepped out of a parked car and began yelling back at Tequimila, the affidavit states.

At that point, Tequimila walked toward his residence and came back with a black shotgun in his right hand, the affidavit states. The boyfriend continued arguing with Tequimila and challenged Tequimila to shoot him, documents said.

By then the woman had gotten into the car and was driving off when she heard a “loud ‘popping’ noise” and her boyfriend in the passenger seat yelled he had been shot, according to the affidavit.

The boyfriend was taken to Franciscan Health Hammond to be treated for multiple wounds to his left arm and hand caused by shotgun pellets, the document states.

Detectives found a plastic wadding from a shotgun shell in the car and a shotgun casing in the front yard of Tequimila’s residence, documents said. A shotgun was later found at the scene along with extra ammunition, according to the affidavit.
