Schererville residents discuss potential Redar Park parking spaces

- By Hannah Reed Hannah Reed is a freelance reporter for the Post-Tribune.

Charissa and Jeffrey Minard said they enjoy living in Schererville and appreciate the fact that they’re able to walk to events at Redar Park.

The Minards, however, are concerned with the possibility of creating more parking spaces to assist with traffic and overflow for events at Redar and Biedron parks.

“I think parking is great, I don’t have an issue with the parking,” Charissa Minard said at the Nov. 13 meeting of the Schererville Park Board, noting that people can sometimes get irritated by traffic during events. “Some people don’t like change … I understand that.”

Charissa Minard also noted she wouldn’t want the events at Redar Park to be moved to Rohrman, and other than the traffic that sometimes builds up, there are no issues.

“Nothing goes too late, nothing is too loud,” she said.

Charissa Minard said she heard about the possibility of the addition of parking spots from Park Board President Brad Bassick, and took to Facebook to see what her neighbors thought.

She said many of them opposed the idea of adding any sort of parking lot to the area, but she and her husband were the only two to show up at the meeting.

Though the discussion of a parking lot addition was not on the agenda, there was talk at the meeting of different ways to create parking while simultaneously keeping green spaces in the area, such as the possibility of lining the streets with diagonal parking spots.

“We do not want to turn the entire space into some massive parking lot,” Bassick said.

Schererville Parks and Recreation Superintendent John Novacich said the park board has no immediate plans to.
