English makes move

Harris English holed a chip-and-run from off the 18th green Saturday for birdie and a 7-under 64, giving him the 36-hole lead at the Mayakoba Golf Classic in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico, as he tries to end six years without winning.

English birdied his last two holes at El Camaleon and led by one shot over Vaughn Taylor, who had a 66 in the afternoon. Brendon Todd, coming off a victory in the Bermuda Championsh­ip two weeks ago, had a 68 and was another shot behind.

English, who was at 13-under 129, won at Mayakoba in the final event of the year in 2013. That was 170 tournament­s ago, and he has yet to win since then.

Zander Lombard will take a one-shot lead into the final round of the Nedbank Golf Challenge in Sun City, South Africa, and is in position to win his first European Tour title at his country’s most prestigiou­s tournament. The 24-year-old South African, who led by two strokes overnight, shot an even-par 72 in the third round to move to 11 under par and stay ahead of compatriot Louis Oosthuizen (71) and Belgian Thomas Detry (69).

Auto racing: Tyler Reddick won his second consecutiv­e Xfinity Series championsh­ip by snatching the lead away from Cole Custer in a spirited season finale at HomesteadM­iami Speedway. Reddick and Custer traded the lead three times in a single lap with Reddick finally surging his Richard Childress Racing entry to the front for good with 18 laps remaining.

College basketball: Darryl Morsell led a balanced attack with 14 points as No. 7 Maryland used a strong defensive effort to power past visiting Oakland 80-50. Anthony Cowan Jr. contribute­d 11 points, seven assists and six rebounds for the Terrapins. ... Less than 72 hours after a humbling loss to No. 16 Ohio State, Saddiq Bey scored 19 points and Justin Moore added 18 to lead No. 10 Villanova past Ohio 78-54.

NFL: The Bears placed TE Trey Burton on injured reserve. He has been limited by a groin problem all season, and he suffered a calf injury in Sunday’s victory over the Lions. ... The Cardinals signed TE Maxx Williams to a two-year extension that runs through the 2021 season.

Soccer: Germany, the Netherland­s, Austria and Croatia qualified for the 2020 European Championsh­ip. Germany advanced with a 4-0 win over Belarus, with Toni Kroos scoring twice and steering the side atop Group C. Second-place Netherland­s also qualified despite a 0-0 draw with Northern Ireland in Belfast. Austria joined already qualified Poland from Group G with a 2-1 win over visiting North Macedonia. Croatia booked its place as Group E winner with a 3-1 win at home over Slovakia.

Tennis: Stefanos Tsitsipas kept his nerve in the key moments to beat six-time champion Roger Federer 6-3, 6-4 and reach the final of the ATP Finals in London. ... Former Wimbledon runner-up Tomas Berdych, 34, announced his retirement after a 17-year career.
