Grayson good to go

Sophomore point guard started most of last season for Trojans

Chesterton sophomore Travis Grayson has no intention of backslidin­g.

Not individual­ly. And, most importantl­y, not with his teammates.

The 5-foot-8 point guard started most of last season as a freshman, taking advantage of an opportunit­y created by an injury. And Grayson helped the Trojans (19-7) win their first sectional title since 1987 as they stunned Valparaiso in a championsh­ip game.

After tasting that success, he envisions even more for Chesterton, ranked No. 2 in the preseason by the Post-Tribune.

“I just want to win a lot this year,” Grayson said. “I want to win the (Duneland Athletic Conference), the sectional, the regional and above. But we just have to take one game at a time.

“We’ll find our true identity. As long as we keep working together and getting better together, we’ll be all right.”

Grayson was more than all right last season. He averaged 6.6 points and had a team-high 58 assists.

It wasn’t always smooth sailing. But he credited his teammates, particular­ly last season’s seniors, for easing his transition.

“I was nervous,” Grayson said. “The game was fast to me. But they helped get me up to speed and glue together with everybody.

“To have that experience is great. The game slows down for you a little bit, you’re a lot smarter. You just understand it more. You get the feel of the varsity level, the varsity speed.”

After a productive offseason, he’s hit the ground running. Coach Marc Urban is excited to have Grayson for three more seasons.

“It’s nice having a sophomore point guard you really trust,” Urban said. “Everything was new to him last year — a scouting report, a walkthroug­h, the details of the way we do things on offense and defense. He’s a smart kid, he’s a tough kid, and he picked up things really well.
