109th Avenue work in Crown Point completed

The 109th Avenue Road Project has completed work for the year, according to Crown Point Chief of Staff Greg Falkowski.

At a Board of Public Works and Safety meeting Wednesday morning, Falkowski said turf has been added to the medians in the road project and beautification has finished and been inspected by the city.

“We’ll start back up next year with the Iowa roundabout and the private expansion from the bridge over to (Interstate) 65,” Falkowski said.

The water improvements project is entering Phase 3 Division C, said Al Stong, president of Commonwealth Engineering, noting it was the last part of the project. Phase 3 Division C will include chloramine stations and other miscellaneous work.

The bid opening for the chloramine stations phase of the project will be at 1 p.m. Oct. 21, and it was decided at the meeting that the bid opening will be streamed over Zoom. Chloramine is a disinfectant used to treat drinking water.

“I believe that might be appropriate in case somebody couldn’t be here for whatever reason that submitted (a bid),” Mayor David Uran said. “They would get two shots to be able to watch it in a live setting.”

The board also approved a partial pay application of $23,940 to a contractor and a payment of $1,260 to retainage for the second phase of the water improvements project, which included work on the Kaiser Park Redundant Tank.

In other business, the board approved the renewal of a two-year contract with the HealtheACCESS for city employees.

The city has had

HeatheACCESS for a few years and it has been beneficial, Crown Point Human Resource Director Karen Marben said.

“I don’t know how we would get by without our clinic during this COVID virus,” Marben said.

HealtheACCESS is located in Franciscan Point, Marben said, though employees are able to use other locations throughout Indiana. HealtheACCESS offers flu shots for all employees and recently extended opportunities for flu shots to family members of employees during the pandemic, Marben said.

“I am 100% behind this program,” Uran said. “This an invaluable tool for our employees … the value that it brings is priceless, we’re very fortunate to have this partnership.”
