Man charged in assault, purse-snatching

An 18-year-old East Chicago man has been charged in Lake Superior Court with robbery resulting in bodily injury, battery resulting in bodily injury and misdemeano­r battery in a Jan. 19 purse-snatching.

Drakkar Malik Boyd told police he stole the woman’s purse Jan. 19 outside Fuertes Meat Market, 1829 Broadway, East Chicago, the probable cause affidavit states.

The woman told police she was walking to the store where she works when a man later identified as Boyd got out of a car and began pulling her purse. The woman said Boyd punched her several times. The co-owner of the market went outside, grabbed Boyd and the purse. He was punched once in the face before Boyd fled. In the process, Boyd dropped his cell phone.
