GARY — A man who opened fire on police serving a search warrant Tuesday was shot in the leg by officers, the department said.

The shooting happened at 6:50 a.m. when Gary officers executed a narcotics search warrant at 5055 Virginia St., said Cpl. Gabrielle King, the department’s public information officer.

King said as police approached the house, they knocked and announced: “Gary police, search warrant.” Shots were fired from inside. The department said Dwayne Gunn, 30, was the shooter.

“Officers began to retreat and Gunn continued to fire shots at them,” King said.

One officer returned fire, hitting Gunn. He was taken taken to a local hospital to be treated for what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries.

“Since a Gary officer was involved in this shooting, investigators from the Lake County Sheriff ’s Department will handle the investigation,” King said.
