Captured prison escapee won’t waive extradition

LAPORTE — A convicted killer and prison escapee captured in northern Indiana has refused to waive an extradition hearing that would have allowed authorities to return him to Michigan immediately.

LaPorte County Prosecutor Robert Szilagyi said Michael David Elliot refused to waive extradition during a hearing Tuesday in LaPorte. Szilagyi said Michigan has 30 days to issue an extradition warrant.

The 40-year-old Elliot is accused of escaping through two fences at a Michigan prison Sunday night. He was arrested Monday in LaPorte County in a stolen car.

Szilagyi says Elliot also was arraigned in LaPorte County on a count of auto theft and ordered held on a $1 million bond.

A message seeking comment was left for Elliot’s public defender, Craig Braje.
