Henderson, Alva I.

Entered into mortal life on August 1, 1929 in Gary, Indiana, the fifth child born to Andrew O. and Luereitta (Robinson) Williams.

She was a graduate from Roosevelt High School class of 1948.

Alva retired from the Gary Public Transporta­tion as an Accounting Clerk and the bookkeeper for her family owned business, Colours Art Décor. Alva was formerly married to late Damon Henderson, Jr. and to this marriage three children were born, Damon III, Gregory and Darrolyn.

Mrs. Henderson was a faithful member of New Tabernacle MB Church for over 73 years where she proudly served as former Church Treasurer, Trustee and many other duties. She loved her church and was known for stylish dress and her hats, affectiona­tely called by others as “the hat lady.”

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Damon III; siblings, Andrew, Ardelia, Selton, Georgia and Barbara.

Alva I. Henderson peacefully entered into eternal life January 27, 2014, leaving cherished memories with her children, Deacon Gregory (Dakota) Henderson and Darrolyn (Deacon Leon) Sharp; sister, Vera Nickerson; grandchild­ren, Dana (Carlton) Marrow, Alvia Sharp, Tasha Henderson, Danyel Henderson, Byron (Erica) Sharp, Todd (Aresha) Henderson, Rev DeEryl Henderson; 10 great-grandchild­ren; special cousin, Lillian Robinson-Terry and many other relatives and friends whom she loved.

Visitation Friday, February 7, 2014 from 12:00 (Noon) to 8:00 p.m. with family fellowship 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 pm. Celebratio­n of Life Services Saturday Feburary 8, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. all services at New Tabernacle M.B. Church, 2416 Pierce Street, Pastor, Chet J. Johnson, Sr. officiatin­g. Interment Oak Hill Cemetery.
