HOBART — Feeling the effects of this year’s repeated snowfalls, Mayor Brian Snedecor wants to be ready to handle on-street parking next winter.

“We need a plan in place in the future with directions for residents, whether it is a plan, ordinance or directive,” Snedecor said during the City Council meeting.

He said cars parked on both sides of the road create a tight squeeze for school buses, plows and fire trucks.

Snedecor said it’s more of an issue this year because of repeated snowfalls.

“The snow keeps building up around the cars and the roads become narrower and narrower,” he said.

He did not have a specific rule in mind, but wants the council to look at ordinances in other communities.

City attorney Anthony DeBonis said any new rule would prohibit pushing snow into the street.

Snedecor said new rules would vary among neighborhoods, since in some older areas of the city, residents must park is in the street.

In other matters, Snedecor said the city cut $2.3 million, or 13 percent, from its adopted budget to comply with the budget as certified by the state.

“It was painful, but we will find a way to get through this,” Snedecor said.

He said it’s been especially difficult this year; the city has spent close to $400,000 already on snow removal : overtime, equipment expenses, salt and gas.

Snedecor said adjustments will be made in fall leaf collection, which also usually involves a lot of overtime hours.
